Chapter thirteen
The vibration from his phone shook Blake awake. Glancing at his watch, he saw it was after ten in the morning. Heâd actually managed a few hours sleep. Surprising, considering he was on the lumpy couch in his office.
Swiping across the screen, he read the text.
â I hope your patient is okay.â
What a sweetheart thinking about him. His fingers moved on the device
âThanks. Itâs been touch and go. Iâm sorry again about ditching you.â
The tone sounded quickly.
âNo worries. Mercedes invited me along with her friends. Antonâs. I thought I saw you at one point.â
Heâd been there and seen her. Dancing and laughing with another guy. He hated how much it bothered him.
âYeah, we stopped in to get some food. The caf was closed early for the holiday.â
âWhoâs we?â
Why was she asking? Curious, or was there another reason? Was it bad if he wanted her to be jealous?
âA family member of my patient. She needed a diversion, so I took her with me to get the food.â
âWasnât it dangerous to leave the child alone that long?â
Carli didnât know the circumstances, and he could hardly fill her in with privacy laws as they were.
âThere were other doctors around. The surgeon and nurses. Theyâd contact me if I was needed. Sometimes, my job is to provide emotional support and comfort to the family, too.â
In this case, that was more of his role. The child was a young teen. His older sister had brought him in after a severe beating from their drugged-out mother, who had also been admitted to the psych unit. The sister was in her early twenties but a college student who lived in a dorm. Theyâd needed to talk about how they would contact the father who lived halfway across the country. But none of this was anything he could tell Carli.
âThatâs good you were there for her.â
Just like Carli to understand. Hopefully, she really did and wasnât just saying it
âYou seemed to be having a great time, dancing and laughing.â
Did he sound pathetic and jealous now? Maybe he was, but he didnât want her to know that. Her response came back fast.
âDid you want me to sit at home by myself?â
âNo, of course not. I hoped youâd find something to do.â
Like see her parents or her brothers or sister, not go to a bar and pick up guys. Especially looking totally hot. The guy sheâd been dancing with had been staring right down into her cleavage. She hadnât noticed, because sheâd been staring at his mouth. It sucked knowing he wasnât the only one she did that to.
âYou looked good dancing. I assume you had your CIs in.â
âI can feel the beat, even if Iâm not wearing them. The music last night was loud and easy to move to.â
And she had been moving, but not in his arms. His plans for the night had included a great dinner at a five-star restaurant, dancing to a big band with his arms wrapped tightly around her, his fingers caressing her back.
